A Little South of Sanity Reviews

A Little South of Sanity

  • AEROSMITH GRANDES EXITOS EN VIVO (2CD)

These guys are rock’s answer to the Energizer Bunny-but they’ve proved again and again that they’re not just running on fumes. This 23-track double album captures them as they should be heard-live, from their Get a Grip and Nine Lives tours. Includes high-octane versions of Angel; Janie’s Got a Gun; Love in an Elevator; Dream On; What It Takes; Walk This Way; Cryin’; Sweet Emotion; Dude (Looks Like a Lady) , and more of the best rock ‘n’ roll you’ll ever hear. Drug addiction couldn’t stop them, nor could the ascension of alterna-rock and the process of aging. Not only are Aerosmith still together, but they’re still recording hit singles. Since their formation in the early ’70s, the band has scored a multitude of platinum albums and Top 40 hits. Moreover, Aerosmith remain a flamboyant, energized live band capable of recapturing that magical, sexual endorphin rush of youthful rock & roll abandon. Yup, on a good night, seeing Aerosmith is like experiencing your first time all over again. So it comes as no surprise that this band’s double live disc is no mere trip down memory lane. Vocalist Steven Tyler still sounds raw, untamed, and on-key, shrieking as passionately as ever and reaching notes Robert Plant and Ozzy Osbourne would sell their kidneys for. And guitarist Joe Perry’s bluesy, blustery rhythms and piercing solos still echo with passion and hunger. The first disc is a bit bogged down with ’90s material, but the band performs stellar versions of “Love in an Elevator,” “Livin’ on the Edge,” “Cryin’,” and “Janie’s Got Gun.” It’s the second disc that really sizzles, as the Toxic Twins dip into their drug-addled past and unleash monsters such as “Back in the Saddle,” “Dream On,” and “Sweet Emotion.” Get your rocks off! –Jon Wiederhorn

A Brand New Song & Dance

A Brand New Song & Dance

HOME-TURF SHOW FROM 1986 DONE WITH MIRRORS TOUR Aerosmith s Done With Mirrors Tour, in support of the band’s 1985 comeback album, was their second live jaunt following the reunion of the classic Aerosmith lineup in 1984. In August and September 1985, the band performed a few warm-up shows (mainly at outdoor venues in areas where the group s following was particularly strong) as a preview before the album s launch. Following the release of Done with Mirrors in November 1985, the band began the main tour in January 1986, when the band played arenas across America through August of that year. Ted Nugent was the opening act of most concerts of this leg, which was confined strictly to the United States, and was generally a success, with the band performing in many cities for two-night stands and playing in a number of large stadiums, such as Sullivan Stadium in their hometown. However, with the album only going gold and failing to meet commercial expectations, it was obvious that the band needed a big hit record and couldn’t continue to rely on touring alone. Only months after the tour ended however, the group had a huge resurgence in popularity following the successful remake of Walk This Way by Run-D.M.C. featuring Steven Tyler and Joe Perry. In the meantime, the band members entered drug rehabilitation and started working on their next album, the multi-platinum smash hit Permanent Vacation (1987). Recorded during the initial leg of the Done With Mirrors Tour, this show is pulled from the Boston-based band’s concert performance near their home turf, in Worcester, Massachusetts on March 12th 1986. The show was broadcast nationally over FM radio airwaves via Westwood One, in conjunction with the In Concert series. Mixing new songs from DWM with classic 70s numbers, such as the wicked wild west, pistol packing concert opener, Back in the Saddle , plus Same Old Song and Dance , Last Child , Walk This Way , a rare live performance of the wild No Surprize , Toys in the Attic , and Steven Tyler’s big power ballad Dream On , the Bad Boys from Beantown kicked out this inspired set with incredible energy, their legendary panache and no shortage of good time rock n roll.

Baying At The Moon Reviews

Baying At The Moon

Having sold over 150 million albums worldwide, Aerosmith can justifiably lay claim to being the best-selling American rock band of all time. Each of the four studio albums from which material in this set is drawn is now multi-platinum selling releases; that’s what you call success. The band originally came together in Boston in 1970. Having quickly built a solid live following locally, the band was soon signed by Columbia Records and their eponymous debut album was released in January 1973. From there the band never really looked back and in 1975 they really broke through into the mainstream with the 8 x platinum selling ‘Toys in the Attic’. This high energy show is from Aerosmith’s 1978 national tour in support of 5th album ‘Draw the Line’. It was broadcast live on Boston’s local FM station WBCN. As you would expect in the band’s hometown, The Music Hall was completely sold out for this gig resulting in what is regarded as the hottest performance from the boys during this outstanding tour. The set list this evening is stuffed with classic numbers – including a brace of Top 40 single hits: Sweet Emotion and Walk This Way. From current album ‘Draw The Line’ are no less than six killer cuts. From the band’s previous album, ‘Rocks’ (1976) come opening cut Rats in the Cellar and Get the Lead Out. The band’s most successful album ever, 1975′s Toys in the Attic is represented by Big Ten Inch Record, Walk This Way, Sweet Emotion and the title track. Also notable is Chip Away the Stone, a song written by Richie Supa, a friend of the band, which was released as a single and also appears on Aerosmith’s ‘Live! Bootleg’ album. Although most of the set is comprised of original material, at the close there are steam-rolling covers of Kokomo Arnold’s perennial Milk Cow Blues and the Yardbirds’ Train Kept Rollin’. But enough of the hyperbole, for real proof of Aerosmith’s metal, just crank this baby up and let it rock!

Honkin on Bobo

Honkin on Bobo

For years, possibly decades, Aerosmith talked about cutting a blues album. They finally delivered with this 2004 endeavor. Purists and scholars might be offended that Steven Tyler and co. don’t deliver the blues the way Muddy Waters or Howlin’ Wolf recorded them, but you don’t become world-famous doing things the way everybody else does. Aerosmith amps up and rocks out the blues as only they can for one heck of an experience.
