Streisand: In the Camera Eye (Barbra Streisand)

Streisand: In the Camera Eye (Barbra Streisand)

Streisand: In the Camera Eye is a collection of 170 of the most compelling photographs of Barbra Streisand, chosen for their rarity, beauty, and insight into Streisand’s multifaceted life and career. The pictures, most of which have never been published before, document her many phases, from her early days on Broadway, including Funny Girl, to her hugely popular TV specials, to her work as an actress in films such as Hello, Dolly!, The Way We Were, and A Star Is Born. Taken by some of the greatest names in photography—including Philippe Halsman, Francesco Scavullo, Douglas Kirkland, Bob Willoughby, and Cecil Beaton—the images also represent her fabled concerts, as well as personal moments away from the set and stage. Seven essays by Spada introduce the various periods of Streisand’s adult life, and, along with substantial anecdotal and quote-filled captions, they combine with the spectacular photos to tell the whole story of one of the world’s most popular and beloved stars.

Barbra Streisand Collection (What’s Up, Doc?/The Main Event/Up the Sandbox/Nuts)

  • What’s Up Doc? The Main Event Nuts Up the Sandbox Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: COMEDY Rating: NR Age: 085392340729 UPC: 085392340729 Manufacturer No: 23407

Director Peter Bogdanovich (The Last Picture Show) tipped his hat to the classic screwball comedies of the 1930s, and especially the most glorious of them all, Howard Hawks’ Bringing Up Baby. Barbra Streisand plays a charming flake who distracts a self-absorbed musicologist (Ryan O’Neal). He’s engaged to be married, but soon Streisand’s character has him chasing after stolen jewelry and getting into one madcap fix after another. Bogdanovich, who is also a film critic, understands the engine of the screwball genre, and his loving revival of the form brings a smile, though it is not quite consistently inspired or funny. There are plenty of great moments, however, including a slap at O’Neal’s own star-making vehicle, Love Story. –Tom Keogh

Up the Sandbox (1972)
Although not as successful as What’s Up, Doc? or The Way We Were, Up the Sandbox springs from the early 1970s, when Barbra Streisand’s career was in full stride. Streisand stars as Margaret, a stay-at-home mom in the middle of New York who’s feeling the strain of her narrow life. Frustrated by her self-involved husband and the emotionally rewarding but mentally unstimulating tasks of motherhood, she escapes into fantasies–such as being hit on by a cross-gendered Fidel Castro, bombing the Statue of Liberty with black militants, and having a furious catfight with her overbearing mother. The movie’s strength lies in these fantasies’ slippery nature; some are over the top, but others are so subtle you’re not always sure where they start and stop, making the portrait of Margaret’s psyche intriguingly complex. Streisand fans should check out this sleeper. –Bret Fetzer

The Main Event (1979)
Comedic misfire from the mid-1970s in a futile attempt to bottle the same lightning that struck when Barbra Streisand teamed with Ryan O’Neal in What’s Up, Doc? Here, Streisand plays a spoiled rich girl, the head of a bankrupt cosmetics company, who discovers she’s lost everything–except her ownership of the contract of a washed-up boxer (O’Neal, known for his combative nature offscreen). So she tries to rally this dispirited pug into a comeback that will earn the kinds of purses that will put her back on her feet. Naturally, in the process romantic sparks are kindled. But despite a loud and energetic performance by Streisand, this Howard Zieff comedy doesn’t add up to much. –Marshall Fine

Nuts (1987)
Barbra Streisand is a mad high-priced “escort” accused of murder, but whether she’s mad as hell or mad as a hatter is the question in this courtroom drama, adapted from the play by Tom Topor. While her doting, willfully uncomprehending mother (Maureen Stapleton) and stepdad with a secret (Karl Malden) try to have her judged incompetent and sent to an asylum, she fights for her day in court with the help of a hapless legal aid attorney (a refreshingly understated Richard Dreyfuss). James Whitmore presides over the hearing with a compassion and sense of justice that gives one faith in a system and la Streisand (who developed and produced the project) sinks her teeth into the tempestuous role like a starving actress. The plot holds few surprised, but the drama lies in the characters and veteran director Martin Ritt (Hud) brings out the best in a top-flight cast. –Sean Axmaker

Downtown Las Vegas is on the Rise: Lists the Newest 2013 Hotspots

Las Vegas, Nevada (PRWEB) June 25, 2013

Downtown Las Vegas was once the ultimate pinnacle of Sin City. In recent years, the glitzy Strip has taken over that role. Many tourists, especially younger ones, dont even bother seeing the real Las Vegas. Seasoned travelers already know Downtown has the best Las Vegas hotel deals, the lowest minimums and plenty of cheap things to go. However, now more than ever, Downtown is a force to be reckoned with. Recently, many renovations and additions have livened up Downtown once again (no, its not another jumbo screen) and it looks like theres enough dough invested to completely revamp the neighborhood. Here’s some of them:

Vegas StrEATS

Vegas StrEATS is a street food and culture festival in Downtown Las Vegas. On the second Saturday of the month, head to the El Cortez Las Vegas parking lot to experience art, music and fashion while chowing down on some of the most delicious grub from gourmet food trucks. Currently in its second year, Vegas StrEATS has become a source of local pride and tourist interest in the heart of Downtown Las Vegas. The eclectic lineup of headliner has included acts such as Mayer Hawthorne, Johnny Cupcake and gLAdiator. This isnt a some cozy little farmers market, Vegas StrEATS has the hottest up-and-coming DJs and street artists with free admission from 6:00pm to 1:00am. Come watch as the Jackie Gaughan Plaza at the El Cortez Hotel and Casino transforms into a mash up of local street culture.

Container Park

Tourists can give their eyes a break from the overbearing lights at Fremont Experience and head to container park in Downtown Las Vegas. Container Park will be one of the most unique shopping centers in the country because it is built out of re-purposed shipping containers and Xtreme Cubes. The main focal point of Container Park is a large Catalyst Dome, but the center will also host restaurants, boutiques, bars and an outdoor theater. Funded by The Downtown project, a $ 350 million initiative to rebuild Downtown Las Vegas, this major development is meant to foster innovation, technology, sustainability and community. This type of flexible urbanization will change the downtown landscape in the years to come. Undoubtedly Las Vegas tourists will join the locals at Container Park in Fall 2013.

Atomic Liquors

Atomic Liquors is the oldest free standing bar in Las Vegas and has decades of history (this place gets its name from the nearby atomic testing facility). Atomic Liquors was established in 1952 and just reopened this June after a two-year hiatus. The bar and liquor store is under new management, and the owners plans to preserve the historic bar and restore it to its original glory. The Rat Pack, The Smothers Brothers and Barbra Streisand (she still has her own chair on display) are just some of the Las Vegas legends who frequented the joint in its hay day. Nowadays, guests can enjoy free parking and drink specials and even get booze to go. The brick building and neon sign may not look like much, but once patrons experience this iconic watering hole, they will understand why everyone has a story about Atomic Liquors.

This new Fremont Street bar opened late last year and is already drawing the trendy crowd from the Las Vegas Strip. The only downside is theres no food, but the focus is much more on the art and architecture anyway. Both the interior and exterior at Commonwealth are absolutely fantastic. The building has an east coast, Great Gatsby vibe and even boasts a rooftop garden bar. The interior is extremely intricate and makes patrons feel swanky (not such an easy feat in Downtown). The prohibition era decor includes hardwood floors, funky leather chairs and outlandish chandeliers. Commonwealth also has a semi-secret speakeasy called The Laundry Room, accessible only by guests with a reservation. Hand crafted cocktails are priced well below Strip standards, making Commonwealth the perfect place to bring a date after dinner.

Chaa Creek Hails New Seaweed Farming Venture in Belize

San Ignacio, Belize (PRWEB) June 03, 2013

The recent replacement of an environmentally damaging fishing operation with a green, environmentally friendly enterprise is one more sign that Belize is becoming a model for sustainable development and responsible tourism, according to The Lodge at Chaa Creek.

Chaa Creek owner Lucy Fleming said the recent conversion of a deep sea fishing boat from bottom trawling to seaweed farming had far ranging implications for this small Caribbean country whose economy depends on eco-tourism.

Belize is such a small country that everything is interdependent, and we all depend on the health of our pristine environment. So to see this fishing trawler converted from an environmentally destructive to an environmentally sustainable business is great news.

It also seems to be a symbol of the direction Belize is moving in, she added.

Ms Fleming was referring to the recent hand-over of the Northern II, a former deep sea bottom trawler, by the international environmental organisation Oceana to the Placencia Producers Cooperative Society, to be used in a new seaweed farming venture.

When the destructive commercial fishing practice of bottom trawling was banned in Belize in 2010, Oceana bought the remaining two working boats. On May 25 2013, the Northern II,” was formally handed over to the Placencia Producers Cooperative Society, a village fishing cooperative.

According to Oceana vice president Audrey Matura Shepard, the organisation gave the Placencia Village coop the trawler for one dollar after reviewing the sea weed farming project and deciding it was economically feasible and environmentally sustainable.

When we saw this very innovative project that will not only take out from the sea but will also put back what they take out, and keeping a certain level of equilibrium, it had to be something we support, Ms Matura Shepard said.

Ms Fleming said that while environmentalists and naturalist guides at Chaa Creek and across Belize saluted the project, it was also good news for Belizes tourism industry and the economy as a whole.

For example, we have a strong eco-tourism base because of the natural, untouched beauty of Belize. The Placencia seaweed farming project is viable because of Belizes unpolluted, rich Caribbean seacoast. Maya farmers in southern Belize produce some of the most sought-after organic cacao in the world, again, because of Belizes pristine and diverse natural environment.

So the addition of one more sustainable business replacing a destructive one and providing employment is great news with positive flow-on effects for all of us.

The more we develop these green sustainable industries the better chance we have of preserving what makes Belize so special, Ms Fleming said.

With a list of supporters that reads like a celebrity whos who, including actors Morgan Freeman, Kate Walsh, Jeff Goldblum, Harrison Ford, Barbra Streisand, Nicolas Cage, Pierce Brosnan, director James Cameron, musician Ben Harper and others, Oceana is an international environmental organisation that has been active in Belize for years.

The Placencia Producers Cooperative Society was formed in 1962 as a village fishing cooperative and is currently engaged in developing long term, sustainable practices for its members. For a change we saw a fishing group that understood the concept (of sustainability) Ms Matura Shepard said when discussing the Placencia Coops success in its application to acquire the Northern II.

Ms Fleming said that the Lodge at Chaa Creek, Belizes first eco-resort, has been introducing travellers to the Belize Great Barrier Reef and its many small islands since 1981 and has always had a strong interest in the health of Belizes stunning Caribbean seacoast.

Even though were based in the rainforests of the Maya heartland our love affair with Belizes beautiful Caribbean has been ongoing for many years, so this new joint venture between Oceana and the Placencia Coop is definitely cause for celebration, and we look forward to seeing more creative green ventures of this sort, Ms Fleming said.
