Over the years there have been many live Billy Joel albums, but mostly from huge stadium tours. This is a chance to hear an earlier live concert, in a more intimate setting. This concert was originally released as a radio broadcast in 1977, four months before the release of Joel’s classic album, “The Stranger.” Now, this recording has been digitally remastered and the sound quality is excellent. Although I have no real way of checking, this is supposed to include the entire broadcast and I have no reason to believe it doesn’t – I cannot find anything which suggests it is not presented here, exactly in the format in which it was broadcast.

Even though the extremely successful album, “The Stranger” is not yet released at this point, Joel had plenty of successful material to draw on and takes songs from “Piano Man,” “Streetlife Serenade” and “Turnstiles,” as well as a request – “She’s Got A Way,” the opening track on his first album, “Cold Spring Harbor,” which he bemoans as being mixed too fast, so he sounds like a Chipmunk! I love his early albums, so I was thrilled to hear this early concert. Joel’s band sounds really tight and he sounds happy and enthusiastic; breaking into extended solos during, “Piano Man,” and “Travellin’ Prayer,” for example This is an artist just reaching his heights, when huge commercial success is before him and he knows that he is about to release more great material shortly.

During this concert, he unveils two new songs; “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant” and “Just the Way You Are,” We also get to hear all the introductions, banter and chat that there was on the original broadcast – from Joel urging listeners to imagine a string arrangement on, “Just the Way You Are,” to complaining of the heat during the performance and apologising for having his back to some audience members.

This concert has been bootlegged over the years and it is great to hear it the complete concert with such great sound quality. A great addition to any Billy Joel’s fan collection.

This is a “radio broadcast”, so it is most likely a bootleg. That being said, it is a high quality recording from the early part of his career. Thoroughly enjoyable & a good repesentation of his early shows. I only have two small complaints : The opening track ‘Miami 2017′ fades in after the opening & ‘Travelin’ Prayer’ is edited in the middle with a fade out and in. Overall, definitely worth having.
