This box set is simply a repackaging of three good albums. There is no connection other than showing three distinct styles of the Bee Gees over the years – all of them in Brothers Gibb talent.

    Spirits Having Flown-

In the difficult position of having to top “Saturday Night Fever”, the Gibb brothers surpassed themselves and created their biggest hit studio album of their careers, including three more #1 hits, making six #1 hit songs in a row! “Tragedy”, “Too Much Heaven” and “Love You Inside Out” were all top hit singles. “Spirits (Having Flown)” was a large hit single overseas. All songs are Barry dominated vocals and he is at his falsetto best. However, “Stop (Think Again)” is a tad long and a little bit tedious, but the following tracks go right back to their upbeat best! Succeeding in avoiding any dance songs (disco), the Bee Gees out-do themselves. These songs are truly funky “R & B” numbers, a solid match for any rythym and blues band. “Until”, the closing solo track may not be equal to their earlier hit “Words”, but Barry’s voice accompanied by the electronic harpsichord makes for a delicious ending.

    Size Isn’t Everything-

This CD contains four hit singles, although the only one to chart in the USA was “Paying The Price Of Love”, a fair, but unsuccessful attempt at ‘hip-hop’. No matter. The rest of the album is wonderful. “Kiss Of Life” has an upbeat tempo with a killer chorus, while “How To Fall In Love, Part I” contains some of Barry’s most soulful singing. Robin matches this soulfulness with his own on “Heart Like Mine”. “Blue Island”, a beautifully harmonized ballad dedicated to the children of Bosnia, has an amazing harmonica solo; unusual for the Gibbs. The remaining songs are all high tempo, especially “Above And Beyond” and “Fallen Angel”, the latter being one of the Gibbs most danceable songs to date. The big sleeper here is, “For Whom The Bell Tolls”, a romantic power ballad that should have been a big hit.

If you buy the IMPORT, you’ll receive “Decadance”, a high-tech remix of “You Should Be Dancing”. It’s worth the search. If you are very lucky, you may be one of the few to find a ‘hidden track’ – another version of “Decadance” not listed on the cover notes!

    One Night Only-

“One Night Only” is a good a masterpiece of live recording as 1977′s “Here At Last…Bee Gees…Live” was. All the great songs are here, plus a few odd album cuts that truly make this set shine. Highlights include, “Grease” with a thunderous crowd roaring approval; “(Our Love) Don’t Throw It All Away’, a true tearjerker with prerecorded Andy Gibb singing with his brothers and “Immortality”, with a wonderful Celine Dion backed by the brothers. The CD is crisp, clean and clear. It is amazing to hear such fantastic producers who’s studio recordings sound the same in concert. This is a classic CD!

The Bee Gees are truly one of the most under rated rock groups in music history…believe it or not. Their history is so much more than Saturday Night Fever, and this 3 CD set is a good primer for post disco time…and leaves behind the wonderful early history of their music, which is memorable and worth another listen as well.

The Bee Gees are just amazing. Feel good, great. Feel sad and they more than cover that.
