Barbra Streisand – Timeless: Live in Concert

Barbra Streisand – Timeless: Live in Concert

Picture this: a television screen filled with an image of a mature woman’s hand holding the hand of an adolescent girl. Then those hands–and their owners, Barbra Streisand and 15-year-old look-alike and singing sensation Lauren Frost–ascend a flight of stairs that leads (suggestively, at least) to destiny itself. A third of the way up, Barbra releases her surrogate child-self… and watches as the latter climbs the rest of the way, disappearing into her future of possibilities.

Wow. Who else but Streisand could still pull off such an audacious moment of sentimental psychodrama, the way that only a true star could? Yet nestled within the autobiographical meringue of the legendary singer’s Millennium’s-End concert, performed at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas on December 31, 1999, that scene–and many other such self-referential moments reliving the sundry chapters of Streisand’s life and career–is quite moving in its laid-bare honesty. A fuller experience than listening to the double CD of the concert, this video record of a magical night (does anyone remember our collective Y2K anxieties that New Year’s Eve?) provides the most bang for the buck when it comes to reliving all those special scenes: surprise guest appearances (Barry Gibb, Bryan Adams, Neil Diamond, and Streisand’s son, Jason Gould), duets with Judy Garland and Frank Sinatra (via video footage, of course), an appearance by dance master Savion Glover as Brother Time, a humorous bit with Shirley MacLaine, and several collaborations with Frost. If Timeless: Live from the MGM Grand was indeed, as Streisand claimed, the first step of a short farewell tour that ended in early 2000, it was the perfect way to exit the stage forever. –Tom Keogh

Barbra Streisand’s final concert(oh, why is she stopping??? If I had been blessed with that voice, I’d be singing every minute!)was just fantastic!! She looked great, sang sooo beautifully, I just did not want it all to end. I’m sure the young lady (Lauren Frost, I think) will have a big future. How great was she!! What a break! During “You’ll Never Know”, “Papa, Can You Hear Me?” and “Just a Piece of Sky” from “Yentl”, my goose bumps never went down. The songs Barbra sang were done to perfection. The only thing I did not understand was, in introducing “Papa, can you hear me?”, she brought up a story about a love letter sent to a woman from her father, before he met her mother. She grew up without knowing her father, knowing he passed away when she was just 15 months old. Her mother raised her, took her to her music lessons, etc., and all she said about her mother was that she had a beautiful singing voice. She talked about praying to her father, during the filming of “Yentl”, she showed a video of her son, boasted about her husband. I just could not understand why her mother was barely mentioned. Oh well, I really ordered this video to hear and watch her sing, but maybe just wished she had just sung!!! Also, when she showed the duet with Celine Dion, I would have hoped she had said “what a voice she has!” instead of a mere “she’s a sweetie” or something to that effect. The video was WONDERFUL though. She has one of the greatest voices of the century! Thank you Fox, for having it on tv, and thank you, Amazon, for the video!!! I’m so so sorry she is finished singing. She is “NOTHING SHORT OF THE GREATEST”!!!!!

How can a performance by Streisand be anything but? She proves, again, that despite the nay-sayers, the critics and others, her voice is nothing less than sheer magic.
The performance (which I saw in New York) is more like a musical play than your standard Vegas outing. Barbra manages to make an event such as this seem intimate and homey – she is sharing with you and the tape brings across the feeling that when she sings (with that beautiful voice that gets better each year) it is only for you.
If you’ve seen her in concert at any time, buy this tape. If you’ve never seen her, watch this and discover the magic and joy for yourself.

This review is from: Barbra Streisand – Timeless: Live in Concert (DVD)
Having seen this show in both Vegas and New York, I was pleasantly surprised at how the DVD actually does capture some of the magic of those evenings. She may have been in slightly better voice at the Garden in September, 2000; but this DVD has it all–the hushed pin-drop silence during the ballads, and the frenzy during The Main Event.
While everyone claims to be a diva or legend these days, this show will demonstrate once again that the greatest star is still the greatest star, and her name is Barbra.
