When I was a kid, I had a Yellow Submarine lunch box. I loved that so much even though I am sure I didn’t understand a lot about the actual movie. When I was surfing the holiday LEGO catalog and came across this, I was thrilled. Initially I bought it for my son but after it arrived, I decided it was a gift to myself. Assembling it was satisfying and nostalgic.

Putting it together is fun and I would classify it as an easy to medium difficulty. It has a lot of unique parts that make assembly feel special. The parts with images are not stickers but printed right on the piece so they are sure to last. The top comes off to show the detail inside. The mini-figs have two faces available (like most ) and each have their own item to hold (John’s telescope, Paul’s love tile, Ringo’s half a hole tile, George’s submarine motor and Jeremy’s Apple.)

Just because you see the outside of the submarine on the box (which by the way, is super cool – very unlike other LEGO boxes) doesn’t mean that they didn’t put the detail into the cabin. It’s packed with little colorful parts and pictures and it’s easy to take the top off to look inside.

It brings back fun childhood memories and a smile to my face. It’s also a nice break from the traditional city/village/blockish sets that I’ve been putting together with my kids for years.

This is a great kit for kids but more fun for adults who grew up in the Beatles era. Did I just age myself?

‘Yellow Submarine’ might be a sing-a-long song and also a great film, but it’s also an industry in itself. Alongside the figures, die cast models, Christmas decorations, clothing, a jukebox (yours for only £4,495, or whatever the US Dollar equivalent is), playing cards, compact mirrors and a plethora of other bits and pieces can be added… LEGO. As Christmas time is here again, me and her decided to go on a shopping trip, so we both bought a ticket to ride to London. We went off on our own and met up later. She really pleased pleased me by surprising me with this. Something I didn’t realise was available.

Part of the LEGO Ideas range, this is brilliant. I couldn’t wait to get back home. I have to admit that the 553 pieces did look a bit daunting at first but I told myself that it won’t be long before it was complete. The grandchildren were there and though I didn’t need any, with a little help from my friends, and the 137 page instruction booklet, we managed to accomplish the task. Because some of the pieces are very small and fiddly, the help they gave was minimal. With an assortment of bricks to begin building, each Beatle comes in his own numbered bag and has to be assembled in order. A tip; keep the pieces in the bag or they’ll end up here, there and everywhere.

There’s plenty of detail here; the four periscopes rotate, as do the two propellers, and the rudder moves. (That detail even extends to the box being printed on the inside flaps too.) In addition, there are no stickers to attach, which no one can ever get on correctly; everything is printed on the bricks. Also, the neat thing about this is that there’s a place the Fab Four can go; the top comes off and they can all climb inside the submarine. Not only that, but they have double sided heads, so you can turn them round depending on your mood (happy or serious).

In addition to the four, there’s also Jeremy holding an apple (who can’t fit inside the submarine), John’s telescope, Paul’s ‘love’ sign, a piece of the engine for George and Ringo’s ‘half a hole’. The submarine has it’s own stand and gives Jeremy somewhere to sit. Other than George looking more like George Michael than Harrison, if you’re a Beatles collector, you’ll know what to do.

Now, her indoors might say about my collection that it’s all too much, but I don’t complain about her knitting. All I’ve got to do is find somewhere to display it.

Enjoyed building the Yellow Submarine! It was my first Lego project. I put on some Beatle music, sat down and began. I found the directions to be detailed and clear. It took about four hours to go from box to completed Yellow Submarine. It now resides on my dresser. This kit was a chance for adult play as well as to add to my Beatles collection. I recommend it!
