Queen: The Complete Works Reviews

Queen: The Complete Works

Clashing together outrageous musical influences and extravagantly visual imagery, Queen’s place in history as the greatest glam band of them all is rock solid. Their fan base continues to grow, a decade and a half on from the death of Freddie Mercury, Queen’s super-charismatic front man.

Georg Purvis’s meticulous, session-by-session, song-by-song, album-by-album, tour-by-tour record of the band’s progress is the complete reference source that Queen fans have been waiting for. If you love the Champions of Rock, it’s all here:

The Band - detailed insights into Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon
The Albums - detailed production history and analysis of every album, including solo releases
The Sessions - in depth coverage from the early days via A Night at The Operaall the way to Made in Heaven
The Songs - hundreds of individual entries on all the famous recordings, as well as obscure, unreleased rarities
The Tours - set-lists and histories of every live show
The Videos - a complete guide to Queen’s groundbreaking video work
The Movies - Flash Gordon, and other projects
Plus - the reunion shows with Paul Rodgers, the radio sessions, the costumes, the parties and much, much more…

It’s not an official Queen publication but I was tempted by the bargain Kindle price. Despite having read a number of Queen books over the years, I found a lot of information that I had not read before. Indeed, it is an exhaustive record of tracks, albums, tours, videos and more. Well worth a read, if you’re a Queen fan

I already had a visual documentary book on Queen with a discography and some tour info, but this goes way beyond. It is amazingly and meticulously researched, and it contains every piece of music done by Queen and its individual members, including all solo work done by Freddie, Roger, Brian and even John. It has every album, song, video, DVD and tour. It even has the music done by the configurations of the post-Freddie Queen, which doesn’t interest me at all but may interest others. It’s a thick book with small print, an encyclopedia, really. My only complaint is that it has no photos at all, which I know isn’t the book’s purpose, but some would have been nice, just to break it up a bit.

I consider myself a fan of rock music and the culture that surrounds it. Queen is a juggernaut. So many different sources of great talent… they have an amazing list of achievements. Just imagine a band entering the studio and coming out saying “okay we have our first two songs for the new album, ‘We Will Rock You’ and ‘We Are The Champions’.” It’s just unreal.

The book is a music historian’s dream as they fully cover Queen’s entire career. The bulk of it is the part where they go song by song. I ate it up and I loved it. Great book for a Queen fan.
